Hey, great news. Nothing happens for ages and then it all moves at once.
So, the FINAL word is:
There will be a School of Design show in the Tower building. This will be a curated show of work from all disciplines across all years eg I imagine some of the Visualising Research work from last semester will go in.
There will also be VisCom Degree Show. It looks close to 100% certain that it will be in the architecture studio in Frasers (the big space at the end of the street) PLUS, probably, the other two Frasers spaces as well. This would mean we could also take over the street in some way. I think this is a great outcome.
More next week.

Illustrated Mural / Signage
Looking at some of the examples of illustrated and personalised signage made me think of Sara Fanelli's Modern Art timeline at the Tate Modern.
She's also made a kind of concertina book of the mural too - nice way of bringing together two different mediums. I definitely think that the catalogue/way-finding system/brochure of the show should have a bit of a keepsake aspect to it - rather than last years which probably hit the bins as soon as people walked out. If the collateral is something people want to keep or even use later then it will encourage others to come check out the show, etc. The best advertising is word of mouth, after all!
I was also talking to Bec Paton last night and she was telling me at her graduate show all the grads had a space not unlike the ones we have at the moment, but above their areas were these lamps that one could put images around (type, illustration or whatever) and each student got to choose what would go on their lamp - creating a nice atmosphere around that students work and truly making it their own.

Where and What @ The Galleries
I found another example of what I mentioned in the post below but using photography and showing two different artworks when viewers look at different angles. I haven't seen them in reality, but I read that these large artworks adorn some of the walls at The Galleries at the moment as part of the exhibition 'Where & What'. We were talking last week about how it would be interesting to incorporate some photography somehow and this could be an interesting technique to consider.

wrong/right
I found this unreferenced on a blog, but included it here as it relates to what we've been talking about - creating a graphic that reads differently from different angles.

In terms of the overall branding of the show, one idea I've been throwing around is working with the idea of the 'designer as explorer'. This exhibition is the result of our four-year exploration into the world of design and what we're showcasing here is ultimately what we've 'collected' along the way - skills in various aspects of design, ideas, values etc. Using shipping containers/recycled/found objects strengthens the theme - these are found items, collected and reused. So thinking about a name surrounding this theme I've been playing with the idea of the 'slash':
Hunt/Gather
Designer/Explorer
Design/Explore
Show/Tell
Depart/Arrive
In terms of the shipping containers indicating either coming or going, leaving or arriving (as we discussed in previous meetings) I thought a really strong name would be "The Arrival". But yes this is already the name of a very popular book by Shaun Tan so perhaps not so usable. Perhaps "Arrive"? To me it indicates this exhibition marks a turning point for all of us, we're arrived somewhere.
Some branding references following the handmade/personal aesthetic:
Racket Design: Set of Cards.
PastaCup Poster
AGDA Vic: The use of handmade 3D type here is really engaging. Could we set up 3D type within the exhibition space?
I think this is the beginnings of a piece at the Ace Hotel New York, not sure who the artist is. Could we hand paint type on the walls of the exhibition space? Time consuming and intricate but fun!

Roman Ondák: Measuring the Universe
I briefly mentioned this exhibition I saw at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2009 in the meeting last week. It relates to Tegan's idea of including all the names of the design students in the exhibition space somehow. In this piece installed in at the MOMA, Roman Ondak has invited museum-goers to record their own height in the space of a four-walled room. What results is a really interesting pattern created over time, working with that traditional practice of recording a child's height on a door frame. Could we think of someway to work with recording a feature of each design student? To have their mark on the space somewhere other than just in their work?
I feel like we could brand this show in a really personal way, which works with the idea of handmade/handwritten text. This is our show, the student's show, after all and the work we've created is very personal in that it is evidence of an intense, four-year journey.

Here is some of the branding for last year's show.
I must say - it certainly looks better on screen than in print. Go to the site to see their trailer - actually kind of nice. Though pointless.
